About the course

This micro-course aims to give the students an overview and a mathematical introduction to general relativity. Starting from a review of special relativity, we will discuss the motivation for General Relativity. Then introduce the mathematical basis of General Relativity: Tensors, mathematics in curved space, covariant derivatives, geodesics, and Riemann curvature tensor. Derive Einstein’s field equations and also try to find some exact solutions. In the end, we will show how GR decomposes to Newtonian gravity in a particular limit and try to derive some results.
